My aunt, who lives in Great Wyrley, was evacuated from Birmingham during the war. I will have to check where she was sent!

Unfortunately the Lichfield Mercury is missing from the Archives for the year 1939, but in the issue of Friday, November 22, 1940 there is a lovely and lengthy narrative from the headmaster FW Shaw of Holy Trinity Junior School, Margate who was in charge of the children who were evacuated to Shenstone, Wall, Weeford, Hammerwich and Stonnall

..."(FW Shaw)has contributed an interesting letter to the Thanet Gazette describing how the children settled down to the country life in Staffordshire where they were evacuated in June...

... At Shenstone every Trinity girl was enrolled in the Girl Guides Movement, and very useful work they have done in helping on the local war effort. In the same village 12 boys became choristers in the Church choir...

...Enemy air activity has not upset the children here. Though the Alert is often heard and distant explosions echo through the air, nothing more disturbing has occurred..."

From a later edition...

...Shenstone... a Brownie pack has lately been formed in connection with the Guides Company under the leadership of Winifred Smith who joined the company as a guide in 1925. She has run the pack in Lichfield for about three years and it will be difficult to find anyone more suited to the work of the Brown Owl, whose job it is to instruct the younger girls. Evacuees from the south east coast have been welcomed both by the Brownie pack and the Guide Company..

And from 6 December 1940.. Readers Views...

...At Shenstone each child billeted arrived at his abode with full instructions concerning him or her and what should be done in case of illness et cetera. We are not aware of this being done in Lichfield...

Thank you for your comment, David. I am sure you are right about Stonnall hosting some of the Margate diaspora. I was amazed at how many came from there to here. I'm very interested to read what you say about Tom's enduring accent. I read elsewhere about a refugee who returned to Margate from Cannock area only for their parent to set to immediately to eradicate the undesirable Midland twang. Cheek!!

Fascinating little snapshot of a wartime evacuee experience from Shenstone. One or two of the Margate evacuees may have 'overspilt' into Stonnall, as I remember one or two using the bus which shipped the 'Stonnallites' as we called them into the Senior school at Walsall Wood. Stonnall only had an Infants and Junior achool.at the time. Walsall Wood had Liverpool and London evacuees. I made friends with one Margate evacuee, Tom Burville, but lost touch with him after leaving school. I met him, 30 years later. He had not returned home after the war, for some reason, but had remained with his 'wartime family' until marriage, working in insurance . He was Manager of The Brittanic Insurance Company in Walsall, when I met him, a slight intonation of his Margate accent from all those years ago, still evident in his speech..
